Until recently, it was generally accepted that
persons with developmental disabilities belonged
in institutions - away from the public eye - so
as not to burden their families. However, a group
of dedicated parents thought differently. They
believed their loved ones with developmental disabilities
could live meaningful lives in their own homes
- in the community. Inspired by the Community
Living Board of Vancouver, in 1984 they formed
Calgary Community Living Society(CCLS).
CCLS committed to ensuring persons with developmental
disabilities had dignity, rights and freedom.
After months of arduous groundwork, CCLS allocated
funds to nine individuals in Calgary, empowering
each to begin life outside the institution. CCLS
helped families develop personal support networks
and organize services, jobs and activities peronalized
to each individual's strengths and needs. Over
the years, CCLS has played a critical role in
assisting hundreds of persons with disabilities
to live in Calgary.
Society has become more receptive to persons with
developmental disabilities. However, the true
value they bring the community has not been fully
realized.
CCLS continues to work towards a secure future
and enhanced quality of life for persons with
developmental disabilities and their families.
Its impact on Calgary continues to grow.
We believe in the value of individuals with a developmental disability.
We believe that everyone should have a full, meaningful and contributing life in their community.
We believe that children and adults with a developmental disability should have the opportunity and support in their community to:
grow up in a family
have a home in the community
learn together in regular classrooms
be employed in the community
develop friendships
participate in and contribute to the life of their community
We believe that everyone has differing strengths and needs which require supports designed to achieve their goals in life.
